CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A high-end Michigan Avenue retailer appears to be trying to prevent smash-and-grab burglaries by parking cars on the sidewalk in front of the store at night.
The Burberry store has been hit by burglars at least three times, twice in one week.
You may recall that a security guard who was in the store during one burglary told police she was in the bathroom at the time.
Now, it looks like the retailer is improvising by parking cars on the sidewalk.
That says a lot, said Rob Carr, President, and CEO of Illinois Retail Merchants Association.
“I think it does speak to the fact that they feel, right or wrong, they feel a bit on their own here and they need to take measures, any measures they can to protect themselves,” Rob Karr, President, and CEO of Illinois Retail Merchants Association told CBS 2.
The Chicago Department of Transportation said it’s not legal to park cars on the sidewalk, and is planning to look into the matter.
Meanwhile, Karr said he is going to continue conversations with city leaders on how to better protect businesses.
“Every time a piece of merchandise is stolen, there’s sales tax that is not collected on that merchandise. And retailers are the largest source of sales tax revenue for local governments and the second largest for the state. Those help fund the services that we all rely upon so we’re all victims,” Karr told CBS 2.
