HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Plans were discussed last night for a permanent memorial to the victims of the mass shooting during the Highland Park Fourth of July parade.
Mayor Nancy Rotering was emotional starting the conversation during a meeting of the Highland Park City Council.
"We know that any conversation about memorials is emotionally fought and ask for your kindness, your patience, and your understanding as we take thoughtful and necessary next steps to provide a space remembarance and healing."
She said the goal is to pay tribute to those who were lost and those who survived.
"Decisions about the memorial will absolutely include feedback from the victims' families, survivors, and the public."
Families of those killed and survivors were present. There is currently a temporary memorial in the rose garden outside the city, which will stay until the permanent memorial is in place.
That could take years.
