(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Highland Park High School parents and students gave school leaders an earful at the school’s board meeting Tuesday night about security after a student brought a gun to the high school last week.

The mass shooting at the city’s Fourth of July parade was also top of mind for many who addressed the school board. They said more security was promised.

“Nobody was shot, but why are we waiting until somebody does get shot and students do get hurt to really do something?” said Starr Hall, a student at the high school.

Starr’s mother said she received a photo from her daughter that said they were in a hard lockdown — and that there was a student with a gun inside.

“I felt like, ‘Is this the last picture of my kid I’m going to see alive?’” she said.

Suzi Wahl is another parent.

“If you continue your complacency and do nothing, there will be blood on your hands when something happens,” Wahl said.

Another student said some kids are afraid to go back to school. A number of parents said the school needs armed guards and metal detectors. One said her son was researching bullet-proof backpacks.

“That’s heartbreaking,” she told the board.
