(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The mayor of Highland Park continues to call for a state and federal ban on assault weapons during a meeting at the Lake County Board.
Before the Lake County Committee of the Whole Friday morning, Mayor Nancy Rotering called on all officials in Lake County to join her in the fight.
“If there is even one step that we can take to save another human life and keep another town from enduring this kind of pain, we have an obligation to try,” Rotering said.
Mayor Rotering, sometimes speaking in graphic terms about the parade shooting in her town, called for activism statewide and nationally.
"I promised my community as a mayor, as a parent, as a neighbor, as a child of Highland Park, as a human being, I will not stop trying, and I ask all of you to join me today, right here, right now."
She reminded officials of what assault weapons are meant to do: kill in a war zone. She said they have no place in American society.
