HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- They were on many people's minds Tuesday - the seven victims of last year's 4th of July parade shooting. The city of Highland Park is still contemplating what a permanent memorial will look like.

Mayor Nancy Rotering said they’ve been talking with other communities that have endured mass shootings such as Newtown and Orlando about a permanent tribute.

A permanent memorial for Sandy Hook victims opened a decade later while there’s still not one seven years after the Pulse Nightclub shooting. Rotering said the City Council plans to discuss it late next month and the temporary memorial next to City Hall will be maintained until the new one is established.

"It's important that we take our time- not rush this process and make sure that we are able to represent as many voices as possible while also giving those most directly impacted the time and space that we need."

The remembrance ceremony on the anniversary of the shooting was held near the temporary memorial for Katie Goldstein, Irina and Kevin McCarthy, Stephen Straus, Jacki Lovi Sundheim, Nicolás Toledo and Eduardo Uvaldo.
