(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Officials in Highland Park on Wednesday announced plans for a series of low-key events for the Fourth of July, on what will be the first anniversary of the mass shooting that claimed the lives of seven people.

There will be no parade this summer. Instead, the city and park district are organizing a community walk and a remembrance ceremony for the seven victims.

People will have to register in advance to take part in the walk, which will have no floats or performers. Other activities will include a picnic and concert. There will be no fireworks, officials said.

“We know that the day will be filled with emotion as we mark the one-year remembrance of the Highland Park shooting,” Mayor Nancy Rotering said in a prepared statement. “We have carefully planned events and activities that will allow our community the time and space to remember the seven individuals who were taken from us too soon.”
