(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The hotel industry in Illinois is pushing local officials to go along with recently revised CDC guidelines that would include hotel workers in the next round of priority COVID-19 vaccinations.
A third of Chicago’s hotels are completely shut down right now, but the head of the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association, Michael Jacobson, says there are still 30,000 employees going to work in Illinois hotels.
They need to be vaccinated, he said.
“We know there have been people with COVID staying in our hotels, including hotels that have instituted contracts with the city and state government to serve as alternative housing sites for these patients,” Jacobson said Monday.
“And yet, until recently, we’ve been told by government officials that we’re not ‘frontline’ enough.”
Jacobson said he’s grateful the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending that hotel workers be vaccinated next, in Phase 1C.
He said he’s hopeful government officials here will go along with that. Many hotels are hosting to reopen in April or May, he said.
Currently, vaccine distribution is in phase 1B.
