(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Temperatures will soar across the Chicago area this week and one expert is offering up a few tips to keep your plants safe.
Just like humans, outdoor plants can have a tough time with dangerously hot temperatures, but some struggle more than others.
More established plants don't need supplemental water, but your fruits and veggies would appreciate it," said Heather Sherwood, senior horticulturist at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
She said the best thing you can do is water your plants when it matters most.
"My recommendation is to water early in the morning- not during the heat of the day when it evaporates."
Sherwood also suggests keeping your garden clean by removing spent foliage and things that might promote rot.
Some may feel inclined to bring patio plants indoors, but Sherwood said that's not necessary.
"A lot of the plants that might move indoors and outdoors actually really appreciate the heat that we are getting and they just might need supplemental watering if you have them in containers."
