(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — About 400 Illinois National Guard members returned home Monday after spending more than a month in Washington D.C.
Gov. JB Pritzker activated the members in late January at the request of the U.S. Defense Department, following the insurrection at the Capitol.
The Illinois group was comprised mainly of the Chicago-based 108th Sustainment Brigade and its subordinate battalion and the 198th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion from North Riverside.
“They have done their duty with pride and immeasurable selflessness and I am proud to welcome them back home,” Pritzker said in a prepared statement. “On behalf of the entire State of Illinois, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the Illinois National Guard and their ongoing commitment to protecting our state and the entire nation.”
Another 100 Illinois National Guard members have volunteered to remain in the nation’s capital until mid-May, officials said.
