(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Hundreds of Chicago Public Schools students were at the Field Museum this afternoon testing out their STEM knowledge.

CPS students tested out the race cars they designed as part of NASCAR and CPS' second annual STEAM fest.

NASCAR Chicago Street Race President Julie Giese says as part of the fest, 600 students, ages K through 12, are competing in a STEM-related challenge.

"Basically what they're trying to do is get their car down the fastest, and they have to go a specific distance to go as well. So they're literally handed a box of items, and they have to build a car"

Principal of Ruggles Elementary STEAM school Tonya Weatherly says the competition furthers the education students are already getting in their schools.

"I can't imagine where these students are going to take us in the next 100 years because of something they learned here"

Winners of the challenge get free tickets to this summer’s NASCAR Chicago Street Race.

Late last year, NASCAR officially announced that the Chicago Street Race will return for Fourth of July weekend.

Race organizers said the 2024 race will mark the second of a minimum three-year commitment between NASCAR and the City of Chicago. It will take place on July 6 – 7.
