(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Federal researchers say Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes are well below average when it comes to ice buildup this winter, despite the recent cold snap.
Jennifer Day of the Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab said only about 4 percent of the Great Lakes are covered by ice.
Over the last 50 years, ice has covered about 20 percent of the Great Lakes by mid-January. Day said we're still early in the ice season.
With continuing cold temperatures forecast over the next few days, the amount of ice covering Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes could increase, she said.
