
(WBBM NEWSRADI0) -- The Chicago area is asking for funding from the federal $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill for the first time.
The Illinois Department of Transportation and Chicago Transit Authority plan to ask for $400 million for reconstruction of the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) and for work on the Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line, which runs along the expressway, according to Crain's Business.
$260 million for the project would come from local and state funding. The total cost of the work is $660 million.
IDOT plans to use any remaining money towards new storm sewers in the western suburbs and the CTA will use it for upgrades to the Cicero and Austin el stops by adding elevators, security, lighting and other features.
