CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The office of the Chicago Inspector General said there still “much work to be done” by the police department concerning body cameras.
The Inspector General's Office said two years after it found that the department was not following its own policies concerning body cameras change has been slow.
It said there is still no standardized process for reviewing video; and there are no policies or procedures for supervisors to identify incidents that should have been recorded, but were not.
Deputy Inspector General Deborah Witzburg wrote, “If the footage they capture is not being reviewed appropriately, body-worn cameras are reduced to high-tech vest ornaments. Without meaningful analysis, CPD is missing critical transparency and accountability opportunities."
And she concluded, “There still remains much work to be done.
“We encourage the department to fully implement changes toward meaningful review and analysis of body-worn camera footage and what it may capture and reveal about the practices of the department and its members.”
