CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Illinois Attorney General and local law enforcement have assembled a retail theft task force that's busted up a car theft ring.

Chicago rapper Tony Sosa, whose real name is Anthony Brown, 40, of Lansing, and Sierra Wells, 27, of Orland Park, are accused of leading the car theft ring and state Attorney General Kwame Raoul said they're charged with identity theft and fraud among other things.

"The indictments are part of 'Operation Free Ride,' an investigation that's been ongoing for some time, and to a pattern of seemingly isolated retail automotive thefts," Raoul said.

Four alleged accomplices used stolen identities to fraudulently obtain financing in cars. Assistant AG Joelle Marasco said most of the cars were stolen from Du Page County but several were from Cook County, too.

"There are car dealerships in Westmont and Frankfort and those are some of the ones that were affected by this particular organization," Marasco said.

She said the investigation continues.
