CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The federal government and attorneys general from all 50 states and the District of Columbia are joining forces to crack down on illegal telemarketing calls.

In a time of deep political divides, annoyance at robocalls is one of the few things that unites Americans of all political stripes.

The Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Justice, and attorneys general from all 50 states and DC are joining forces for “Operation Stop Scam Calls,” which is meant to focus on the telemarketers and the companies responsible for the billions of illegal robocalls that are generated each day.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said illegal robocalls are a big problem that require a big response.

“Scammers are difficult to track down because they use technology to hide their identity then evade detection…A single call could travel through dozens of carriers before reaching your phone,” Raoul said.

Over 180 enforcement actions are part of Operation Stop Scam Calls.
