(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A statewide assault weapons ban now only needs approval from Governor J.B. Pritzker, after the Illinois House reconciled its own bill with the ban approved by the state’s Senate Monday evening.

Members of the Illinois House approved the measure, known as the Protect Illinois Communities Act, by a 68-to-41 vote.

The bill seeks to partially ban the sale, manufacture or possession of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Regarding the latter, magazines for long guns that hold over 10 rounds would be banned, while handgun magazines holding over 15 rounds would be banned.

Following the bill’s passage through the House, the Illinois State Rifle Association issued a statement directed at Pritzker, Senate President Don Harmon, and House Speaker Emmanuel “Chris” Welch:

“Challenge accepted. The Illinois State Rifle Association will see the State of Illinois in court.”

Pritzker released his own statement on the ban’s passage, in which he thanked Harmon and Welch for “championing this historic legislation.” The governor said he and other state leaders have been working to get “the most dangerous weapons off our state’s streets.”

“Today, honoring the commitment we made, we passed one of the strongest assault weapons bans in the nation, one I will be proud to sign,” Pritzker said in his statement.
