CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois stands to receive more than $200 million in federal housing funds as part of the Biden Administration’s American Rescue Plan.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development reported it’s allocating $5 billion nationwide to help local communities create affordable housing programs and to fight homelessness. Illinois is slated to receive about $204 million.
HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge said homelessness was a high priority for the agency even before COVID-19, and the pandemic has made conditions even worse.
The City of Chicago is expected to receive more than $71 million in federal help. Cook County will get nearly $24 million. Lake and DuPage counties have been promised about $6 million each; and there’s around $3 million each coming to the cities of Aurora and Rockford.
Among other local governments, Evanston could see about $1.3 million; Springfield $2.3 million, and Peoria $2.4 million.
HUD officials said the money gives communities the flexibility to meet the needs of people experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless.
