(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois is third on a list of the states with the most bridges in need of major repairs, according to a new report.

The report from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association says more than 2,300 bridges in Illinois are classified as "structurally deficient," which means they have key elements that are in poor condition.

“For decades, we did not invest in our infrastructure,” said Mike Sturino, president of the group's Illinois chapter. “This is what happens when you don’t take care of these fundamentals.”

He said the $2 trillion infrastructure bill proposed by President Biden would help but adds he's not sure if it would include enough money to address all of Illinois’ bridge repair needs.

Sturino said he also worries the bill might have trouble passing because critics complain it folds in social program expenses that are not related to infrastructure.
