(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois High School Association board has voted to discontinue state tournaments for boys gymnastics and debate.

A lack of participation is the reason.

"This was a difficult decision that comes after significant discussion and a diligent review of historic data and participation trends," said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “After years of decline in participation, boys gymnastics and debate no longer meet the threshold required by IHSA Policy to conduct a State Series."

The policy is that if less than seven percent of schools have teams, there are no state tournaments. Boys gymnastics and debate both dipped below seven percent several years ago.

They’re not being eliminated-just no state tournaments.
