CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Looking for some extra work this winter? The state of Illinois is hoping job hunters will consider becoming one of its “snowbirds."
Maria Castaneda, a spokeswoman with the Illinois Department of Transportation, told WBBM Newsradio snowbirds are hired to drive snow plows and salt trucks each winter.
"It's a seasonal position. In other words, they come in to take care of the winter elements, remove the snow. We do start bringing on the snowbirds around November. But again, it's a seasonal position. So it's roughly from November to typically maybe April," Castaneda said.
Castaneda said snowbirds need to have commercial driver's licenses with special endorsements.
Applicants must also submit to a criminal background check and get a pre-employment physical. Those interested in applying for snowbirds positions can visit work.illinois.gov.
