The state of Illinois is providing more financial help to homeowners, who are behind on their mortgages for reasons related to the COVID pandemic.

Kristin Faust, director of the Illinois Housing Development Authority, said the program is designed primarily for homeowners who have been unable to get other forms of relief. She said before people can apply for the grants, they need to first talk with their lenders about possible arrangements or meet with a federally approved housing counselor.

"They can get up to $30,000," Faust said. "They will match the amount that they're behind. If they're eligible."

She said the money can also be used to pay overdue property taxes.

The state will begin accepting applications for the grants in April. More information is available at IllinoisHousingHelp.org.
