(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois lawmakers say they’re working to make the state budget more equitable, even if they disagree about how to do that.
Illinois state Sen. Mattie Hunter told a Center for Tax and Budget Accountability symposium that Illinois is starting to direct its finances in a fairer way. She says Illinois hasn't always done the right thing.
“We’ve made significant strides in the last few years,” she said.
State Rep. Dan Brady, R-Bloomington, said government can’t be everything to all people. He said officials must prioritize and focus on residents who truly need help the most.
He called the COVID-19 pandemic a “torpedo that no one saw coming, just when things were starting to look a little brighter on a lot of different fronts.”
The key Illinois lawmakers from both sides of the aisle agree that sometimes the General Assembly gets a bad rap.
“Our elected officials in Springfield are a lot of things. They’re not wasteful spenders,” agreed Ralph Martire, who directs the organization that held the symposium.
The speakers will be the subject of this weekend’s “At Issue,” which airs 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
