SPRINGFIELD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Illinois Senate passed a multi-billion dollar state budget Sunday night.
Lawmakers voted 38 to 21 to approve the $53.1 billion dollar budget.
It closely resembles many of Governor J.B. Pritzker's goals, though it exceeds his initial budget proposal by $400 million.
The budget includes a combined $622 million dollars for migrants and health care for undocumented people.
Republicans like Senator Sally Turner said the budget does not put its Illinois citizens first.
“I think this budget is just another example of a long list of misplaced priorities,” Turner said. “It fails to make the citizens of our state its priority.”
The plan also includes $750 million in tax hikes, cost-of-living pay raises for lawmakers, and the elimination of a one percent grocery tax.
Pending House approval, the budget takes effect July 1.
