
(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The State of Illinois is spending more than $12 million to help more students get to school safely.
Paul Wappel of the Illinois Department of Transportation said the money will improve sidewalks and bike paths near schools, as well as ensure they are accessible to students with disabilities.
“To make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative and encourage, of course, a healthy lifestyle and active lifestyle from an early age,” Wappel said.
The state announced that it is awarding grants to 17 suburbs to help them make sidewalks and bike paths safer for students, as well as reduce the risks of crossing busy roads.
“Repairing sidewalks, making them ADA compliant, things along those lines,” Wappel said. “It’s a great enhancement for a lot of schools and a lot of areas throughout the state.”
