(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Faculty at Illinois State University have filed their “intent to unionize” with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board.

The union effort started in August and organizers say an overwhelming majority of 650 tenured and tenure-track faculty signed on to become members of the United Faculty of ISU.

Dave Kopsell, ISU professor of agriculture, said, in a statement that “joining a union is the best way to ensure safe, fair, and equitable working conditions for ourselves and a stronger university for everyone.”

“Higher education faculty across the country understand it’s only through the collective clout a union brings that their voices are heard and issues addressed," American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said.

They expect to be certified by December.
