(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois’ new assault weapons ban will eventually be before the justices of the Illinois Supreme Court.

As those interested in the assault weapons ban await word from the Illinois Supreme Court on its constitutionality, State Rep. Patrick Windhorst said that the bill was rushed through the General Assembly.

“From the start of the first hearing on the bill until the governor’s signature was approximately 41 days,” Windhorst told reporters at the Capitol Wednesday.

Regardless, there remains the very real problem of shootings - including but not limited to - in schools and workplaces.

“We need to put more law enforcement in schools,” said veteran policeman and State Rep. John Cabello, accusing Democrats of doing the opposite.

“No one should be against that. Period.”

Cabello also said one big flaw in the assault weapons ban is that criminals who use those guns don’t care about the law.
