(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- New laws taking effect the first of the year will impact buying, selling and driving cars.
Car dealerships will be authorized to conduct sales and deliveries over the internet and digital signatures will be allowed, leveling the playing field with online services like Carvana.
Also, police will no longer be able to pull over a car solely because something is hanging from the rear-view mirror. That includes things like fuzzy dice, air fresheners, rosaries, or disability placards from the rearview mirror. Its been called the “air freshener law.”
Another change is expected to help police investigating car thefts. Auto manufacturers will have to have someone available 24 hours a day to assist police with tracking.
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart pushed for that, according to CBS 2.
"So in the event of a carjacking, our agency - any agency - can call one number, and that number can access that manufacturer and get the tracking going right away," he said.
