(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chinese manufacturer Gotion, which makes batteries for the electric vehicle industry, will open a $2 billion plant in Manteno, Ill.

Illinois leaders promised more than $500,000 in incentives to land the plant, which is expected to employ 2,600 people.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker called it a “giant leap forward” and added that the plant is “the most significant new manufacturing investment in Illinois in decades.”

“This new facility will produce lithium ion battery packs and battery cells to power electric buses, electric trucks [and] electric cars made in the USA,” Pritzker said.

Manteno Mayor Tim Nugent was also present at the ceremony..

“Years ago, the entrance signs to the village of Manteno read, ‘Small town, big future,’” Nugent said. “I think that announcements like today are exactly what they were hoping for.”

There will also be a training academy to prepare workers.

The plant is expected to be operating in 2024.
