CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The movement to have tipped workers paid the same minimum wage as everyone else seems to be gaining momentum at City Hall.
Ahead of the City Council meeting, several restaurants that don't pay their workers what's called the sub-minimum wage, served the Alderpersons breakfast. Jesse Iniguez, the owner of Back of the Yards Coffee, said they are showing that eateries can pay their workers more and do well.
Mayor Johnson said low-wage restaurant workers deserve more.
"I see any effort that we put forth as government to secure the economics of working people certainly places us in a far better position to have a sustainable economy."
After the meeting, he said people need to make enough money to live, but he also acknowledged the needs of the restaurant industry.
With progressives in the Mayor's office and heading key committees, that effort is underway.
