INDIANAPOLIS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Indiana is a signature away from allowing residents to carry handguns without permits.
Lawmakers in both the House and Senate approved the permit repeal largely along party lines.
"It hurts to see us advancing a piece of legislation that supports spreading and allowing more guns to be on our streets," said Indiana state Sen. Fady Qaddoura, a Democrat who was among those opposed.
Republican state Sen. Eric Koch said this simply puts law-abiding citizens on equal footing with criminals.
"Lawful carry gives criminals a reason to fear that any potential victim could be armed and thus disincentivizes criminal conduct," Koch said.
The State Police Supt. Doug Carter, a vocal opponent along with police organizations, told lawmakers if you “support this bill, you will not be supporting us.”
Gov. Eric Holcomb has said he’ll give it “careful thought.”
