(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A bill passed in the Indiana Senate would allow school employees to be criminally prosecuted for providing materials considered “harmful” to minors.

Material deemed “harmful” could be books that contain sexually explicit content. Rhonda Miller, president of a parents group, told CBS 4 Indianapolis, she’s all for it.

“We always talk about it’s all for the kids. Let’s put them first and let’s keep this material away from them.”

The sponsor, Republican Senator Jim Tomes, said, "We're talking about really, really, really bad books." He didn’t name any, however, according to the Times of Northwest Indiana.

Rachel Burke, president of the Indiana Parent Teacher Association noted that books like the Great Gatsby, which contains sex and drinking, could be considered “harmful," but she she doesn't "have that right to make that decision for someone else’s children.”

Democrats said the legislation is vague and would be used by activists to remove any books they don’t like.
