Indiana lawmakers consider controversial education bill that would restrict how schools teach race, gender and ethnicity topics

INDIANAPOLIS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Indiana lawmakers heard hours of testimony yesterday from people opposing a controversial education bill that would limit how issues like racism and social justice are taught in classrooms.

There was a long line of people wanting to testify before the Senate Education Committee, about 200, 90%, according to the committee chairman, in opposition.

They were not all allowed to speak since a cut-off was implemented otherwise they may have been there for 10 hours.

"How can a student learn to hone their voice from a silenced teacher when this bill seems to give a fresh coat of paint to the ruins of censorship?” Aaron Becker, a teacher, said during his address to lawmakers.

CBS 4 Indianapolis reported parent Dawn Lang spoke in support of the legislation.

"There's a reason why this has come to the state level. There's a reason why parents en masse – not just within the state of Indiana but other states as well – have reached a point of frustration," Lang said.

The education bill is far from becoming law.
