CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Highways in Louisiana are packed with people trying to get out ahead of Hurricane Ida. A native of Munster, Indiana is among those leaving.

Jeff Gubitz said grocery store shelves around New Orleans look like those here before a snowstorm — picked clean.

He told WBBM Newsradio his Jefferson Parish home isn’t under evacuation orders but others some 50 miles south of him are.

“Mandatory evacuation low lying areas. And the rest of us have been told ‘get yourself some sandbags, make sure you’ve got enough supplies for a couple of days.’ And then there are a number of folks — my family included — that will be departing,” Gubitz said.

Those who aren’t able to get out on their own, Gubitz said, have the option to take a fleet of busses offered by the governor to get away from floodwaters.
