HAMMIND, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott, a democrat running for US Senate, has released a new campaign ad, showing him smoking marijuana.
The ad opens with the sound of a lighter. McDermott is seen smoking a joint and passing it to someone else in a backyard in Illinois.
He’s sitting with two attorneys, a distiller, a physician and a member of the Hammond City Council.
Each is part of the conversation.
"Here's the bottom line. We need to legalize marijuana on the federal level," said McDermott in the ad. "We also need to legalize cannabis in Indiana as well, so hoosiers can get the health and economic benefits of cannabis. That's the future we all deserve."
This is a first for a candidate for statewide office in Indiana.
If he were in office today, McDermott said he’d vote for a federal decriminalization bill that’s been held up in the Senate.
