Indiana officials deploy National Guard, warn residents to stay off the roads until further notice

INDIANAPOLIS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Indiana Department of Transportation has asked people to stay home and off the roads throughout the state until further notice and the state’s response includes the National Guard.

INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuiness said this snowstorm needs to be taken seriously since snow plows have been having difficulty keeping up with the heavy, wet blowing snow.

“INDOT urges drivers to stay off the roads through the storm to give our crews room to work and make the roads safe,” McGuiness said.

State Police Superintendent Douglas Carter says if you end up stranded, help may not be on the way.

"And I hate saying that to you. But I think it's important that we talk about the reality of what this could mean,” Carter said.

The State’s Department of Homeland Security Director, Steve Cox, said
the National Guard – 240 soldiers in 60-teams – are part of the response “to assist stranded motorists in the event that that's a need in any one given area.”

Gov. Eric Holcomb also reminded residents to look out for those who live nearby.

“We want to make sure that neighbor by neighbor is checking in on one another,” Holcomb said.

The governor said this is a first in his five years in office, having a state-wide weather emergency that has heavy snow in the north and ice in the south.
