(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Indiana schools would be required to notify parents if their child requests a name or pronoun change at school under a bill that’s now on the governor’s desk.
The vote in the Republican-dominated House was 63-28 largely along party lines.
State Representative Michelle Davis is the sponsor.
"I believe that parents know their children best and their authority should not be superseded by teachers and or school administrators.”
The proposal would require school officials to provide written notification to a child’s parent or guardian within five business days of the child asking to be called a different “pronoun, title, or word,” according to the bill.
Opponents derided the proposal during legislative hearings as an attack on the state’s LGBTQ+ students.
State Rep. Vernon Smith, Democrat from Gary, said its “copycat” legislation promoting a fallacy that schools are teaching children to become transgender or gay.
