
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The state of Indiana is rolling out vending machines that dispense a life-saving drug.
The St. Joseph County Jail in South Bend is the home to the state's first ever naloxone vending machine.
Naloxone is is medication that is approved to block the deadly effects of an opioid overdose.
Nineteen vending machines will be installed statewide.
The machines are free and are stocked with 300 naloxone kits that include a single dose of naloxone, instructions for use,and a referral to treatment for a substance abuse disorder.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Indiana reported a 32% increase in fatal overdoses between April 2020 and April 2021.
