Ex-Chicago cop who killed Laquan McDonald back in Illinois ahead of upcoming prison release

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Convicted former Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke has been reported to be in the state ahead of his expected release on Thursday.

Relatives of Laquan McDonald were notified of Van Dyke’s upcoming release after he served only half of his nearly seven year sentence for second degree murder and aggravated battery.

CBS 2 Chicago reported the 43-year-old was to be transferred back to Illinois after time in federal prisons on the east coast.

Bishop Tavis Grant, national field director for the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, is among those calling for the department of justice to file federal civil rights charges.

“No other defendant or convicted murderer in the state has been coddled and covered like Jason Van Dyke,” Grant said.

Jesse Jackson, Congressman Bobby Rush and others have called for protests if Van Dyke is in fact released on Thursday.
