(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Dog walking and pet-sitting scammers are taking a bite out of people's bank accounts.

Working as a dog walker or pet sitter may seem like a great part-time job, but scammers are hounding people with fake job offers.

It often begins with an ad that appears to be a friendly family looking for a pet sitter.

They give excuses why they need to hire someone immediately. They offer you a great rate, and once you accept they ask for your banking information and other personal data under the guise of doing a direct deposit.

The BBB advises to:

- Never give your personal information to strangers.

-Do thorough research on the person hiring you.

- Stay alert to red flags like grammar mistakes in emails, or instant job offers with a request for personal information.
