Johnson blasts Texas governor's tactics as migrant crisis continues, calls on federal action

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Brandon Johnson is again calling for federal action to help ease the migrant crisis, and doubling-down on his distaste for the tactics of Texas Governor, Greg Abbott.

The mayor was on CNN Friday along with the mayors of Denver and New York calling on Abbott to he held responsible for the safety of the growing number of migrants coming to the city.

"It is very evident that you have a governor who is committed to recklessness and lawlessness," he said. "We can not allow one individual to sow seeds of discord and not be held responsible."

Johnson called Abbot's tactics inhumane saying that migrants sent from Texas are now being dropped off in places outside of Chicago, sometimes as far as 100 miles away , but are told they are in Chicago, when they are in fact "literally in the middle on nowhere."

He is now calling on the federal government to work to handle the current migrant crisis the way it handled Ukrainian and Afghan refugees.

"Why aren't those same support services being provided for individuals coming from the continent of Africa and South and Central America," he questioned.

Abbot decided to expand Texas' border transportation operations to include flights to Chicago earlier this month. Texas' first migrant flight departed El Paso on December 19 and arrived in Chicago that evening with over 120 migrants.

In a social media post, Abbot said since the City of Chicago has started "obstructing and targeting" Texas's busing mission by penalizing bus companies that drop off migrants without prior notice, the state will be sending migrants via airplane as well.

Chicago has received more than 26,000 asylum seekers over the last several months.
