(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Political observers say Brandon Johnson's come-from-behind victory in the race to become Chicago mayor was due partly because he did better than expected in some areas where he was thought to be weak.

Former city budget guru Paul Vallas made a strong push in the "liberal lakefront" wards, but former television anchor Robin Robinson notes Johnson followed in predecessor Lori Lightfoot's footsteps by winning the 46th 48th and 49th wards.

He appeared to barely win Tom Tunney's 44th Ward. Political reporter Erin Hegarty of The Daily Line notes Tunney had backed Vallas and was campaigning with him right up until the election. This raises questions about how much endorsements mean, Hegarty said.

The runoff between Johnson and Vallas kept the issue of violent crime in sharp focus. But Johnson may find himself pulled in two different directions as he addresses the issue, the observers say.

Hegarty says Johnson will face pressure to do something quickly, even if, as Robinson notes, the candidate was more focused on addressing the root causes of crime.

This weekend's "At Issue" program will examine the dynamics of the mayoral election. It airs 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
