CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Joliet police officers shot and killed an armed man who was allegedly threatening to shoot people Tuesday evening in the far southwest suburb.
According to a statement released by the Joliet Police Department, officers were called to a man threatening to shoot people around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night in the 800 block of Second Avenue.
The block is mostly filled with single-family homes, according to Google Maps.
When officers arrived, they found the man in the street holding what appeared to be a handgun, police said.
“This male subject threatened officers on the scene at which time shots were fired,” police said in the statement. “Life saving measures were immediately performed on the subject by the Officers on the scene."
The man was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, police said, where he died.
Officers involved in the shooting were taken to AMITA Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, according to the police statement, but no officers were injured.
The Will County Coroner’s Office has not released the man’s name or autopsy results.
The investigation was turned over to the Will-Grundy Major Crime Task Force, police said.
“The task force will be handling all of the media requests,” the statement said. “Any updates released by the Joliet Police Department will come from the task force and we will post them on our Facebook page.”
In 2019, a Joliet police officer fatally shot someone during a hostage standoff after the suspect opened fire on officers.
