CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A judge has just declined an effort to dismiss bribery charges against disgraced former State House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Attorneys for the longtime Democratic power broker had tried to get the charges thrown out  based on the  U.S. Supreme Court’s June ruling in the bribery case of the former mayor of Portage, Indiana, James Snyder. The decision narrowed the definition of bribery.

But in a ruling issued this morning, Federal District Judge John Robert Blakey has rejected the defense arguments.

Prosecutors charged Madigan in connection with an alleged scheme to have friends and supporters installed in do-nothing jobs at ComEd in exchange for supporting legislation the utility favored.

Jury selection for Madigan's trial is set to start next Tuesday, Oct. 8.
