CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - After a growing number of violent attacks on the CTA, the mass transit agency announced it has signed a contract to have K-9 teams return to patrolling the system.
Under the $30.9 million dollar contract, Action K-9 will have up to 100 unarmed guards and 50 canines working along the “EL” for a year and a half. It is being funded out of the operating budget.
Faced with mounting pressure over shootings and stabbings, the CTA has already hired 300 unarmed guards to work daily. CTA President Dorval Carter said the addition is proof of following through on its commitment to security. The CTA has hired Action K-9 before but the agency said doubling the number of guards per dog will allow them to handle a variety of situations.
The Tribune reported Action K-9 had sued the CTA three years ago, arguing the firm was hired after it did not have enough training.
A spokesperson said the CTA has not finalized when the teams will be deployed.
