KANKAKEE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The hanging death of a detainee at the Kankakee County Detention Center is being investigated by the county coroner and the Illinois State Police.
Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner said 50-year-old Jim Krumwiede was found unresponsive in his cell on New Year's Day.
Gessner said correctional officers immediately began first aid, before Krumwiede was taken in critical condition to a hospital where he died.
“We’re waiting for the toxicology [report]. That comes back and then goes to our forensic doctor, and then him and I talk about what the final results will be, but it will be awhile yet. It takes six to eight weeks to get everything back,” Gessner said.
The Kankakee Daily Journal reported Krumwiede was awaiting sentencing after a judge convicted him in November on charges of domestic battery and interfering with a domestic violence arrest.
