ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A northwest suburban girl who was kidnapped six years ago has been found alive in North Carolina.

Kayla Unbehaun’s disappearance had been among those featured six months ago in a Netflix series. She had been taken from her home in South Elgin in July of 2017 by her mother, who did not have legal custody of her.

Saturday, the now 15-year-old girl was found safe in North Carolina. Police said a woman at a store in Asheville recognized the girl’s mother from published media and called police.

Heather Unbehaun was arrested and is expected to be extradited to Illinois to face charges.
