(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Since 9/11, the phase "If you see something, say something" has become part of the lexicon.

Now, a southwest suburban middle school is encouraging students to speak up if they observer something that doesn’t sit right, in an effort to keep each other safe.

Palos South Middle School Principal Stu Wrzesinski tells WBBM Newsradio that if school administrators are clued into a concern, they can deal with it.

“If we know what’s going on, we can help. We can do something about it. We can tackle an issue before it becomes something huge,” he said.

Palos South Middle School has an enrollment of about 700 students. Most of them have been doing in in-person learning five days a week since October.

The “Say Something” programming is inspired by the Sandy Hook Promise organization.
