(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A man convicted of the 1998 murder of 11-year-old Ryan Harris has filed a petition for clemency over the objections of the girl’s family.
Floyd Durr, 52, is currently serving a life sentence plus 30 years. His bid for an early release is being considered by the state’s clemency board, which will makes a recommendation to Gov. JB Pritzker.
Sabrina Harris, the young girl’s mother, joined other family members at a hearing Wednesday at the Thompson Center to oppose of Durr’s release.
Harris said it bothers her that her daughter’s killer lives and the girl does not.
"I used to have a problem with working because I felt my taxpayer dollars was taking care of the man that killed my child," she said.
In 2006, Durr was linked by DNA to the murder of Ryan. He was already serving 125 years in other sexual assault cases.
