(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 47-year-old Wauconda man was fatally shot by Fox Lake police officers late Sunday after he lunged at them while holding a knife, authorities in Lake County say.

A 43-year-old woman was injured in the incident.

Fox Lake police were called to a Howard Avenue residence around 11 p.m. after receiving a report of a man damaging a vehicle and throwing a golf club at another person, the Lake County Major Crime Task Force said in a news release Monday.

As two police officers attempted to arrest the suspect, he allegedly pulled a knife out of his pocket and “pointed it toward the officers,” officials said. The man ignored instructions to drop the knife and “lunged toward one of the police officers with the knife drawn,” the news release said.

Both officers fired toward the man, who was fatally struck and died at the scene, police said. A 43-year-old woman was struck in the leg and taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay, officials said.

An investigation continues, and an autopsy is planned for Tuesday.
