(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Book ‘em, Danno.
The Lake County (Illinois) Sheriff’s Department on Friday announced the name of its newest K-9 unit, a 20-month-old male German Shepherd.
Sheriff John D. Idleburg said “Danno" is indeed a reference to the twice-done television show, Hawaii Five-O. People of a certain age will remember Jack Lord as Detective Steve McGarrett, telling his sidekick Danny “Danno” Williams (James MacArthur) to take that week’s suspect into custody.
“I think everyone who grew up watching Hawaii Five-O will have a light-hearted appreciation for the name Danno,” Idleburg said in a news announcement.
Sheriff’s officials had asked the public to help name the police canine, which will join other dogs in the department, including the celebrated K-9 known as Dax.
Fifth-grader Norah Gault of Barrington is credited with submitting the winning name suggestion.
Danno has already met his human partner, Deputy Andrew Martini, and both will undergo training.
